Spotlight Trends – Lara's Top 4 Favorites for 2024 PLUS Bonus Trends!
The early spring is the perfect time to assess your interiors and make changes that will improve the feel and functionality and upgrade the look of your home. Interior home design trends for 2024 are all about creating a home that's comfortable, functional, gorgeous, and most importantly, a reflection of you! Here are 4 of my favorite interior design trends to incorporate into your home designs for this year and beyond...
1Wallcoverings! OMG there are so many unique and gorgeous wallpapers and wallcovering materials out there to choose from these days! The large surfaces of your rooms are the backdrop of every interior design so it's incredibly impactful to cover them in something special. This enhances the look and feel of your room, and sets the tone and stage for everything else in the room. Whether you do a subtle color and textured covering to tie in colors and add interest, or do a statement wallpaper on only 1 main wall, or apply a mural that wraps around the room, the effect will be beautiful. Getting creative with wallpaper placements is super fun too, like adding it to the back of a bookshelf or creating large repeating panels of it framed in moldings across the walls. Wallpaper companies are also making stunning vinyl wallcoverings that are super durable, stain resistant, and absolutely gorgeous. With so many limitless design options, I know this fabulous trend will be staying with us for years to come :-)
2Quartz countertops have surged in popularity, becoming a staple in modern kitchens and bathrooms and therefore in my designs! What sets quartz apart is its blend of beauty and durability. Composed of natural quartz crystals mixed with resin, quartz countertops offer a stunning array of colors and patterns, mimicking the appearance of natural stone without the maintenance. Unlike granite or marble, quartz is non-porous, making it resistant to stains, scratches, and bacteria growth—a crucial feature in high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Its versatility extends to its ease of cleaning and maintenance, requiring only a simple wipe-down with soap and water. Moreover, quartz countertops offer homeowners peace of mind with their longevity and enduring aesthetic appeal. As the demand for both functionality and aesthetics in home design continues to rise, it's no wonder that quartz has emerged as the preferred choice for discerning homeowners and designers alike.
3High Performance Fabrics & Faux Leathers: Evolving textile technology has lured outdoor upholstery fabrics and trims inside, making for easy care interiors whether for a city loft or in a country retreat. High-performance outdoor textile design has so greatly evolved that even the savviest of interior design professionals sometimes can’t tell the difference between interior and exterior options. Fabric houses are producing great-looking acrylic velvets, faux leathers, and treated canvases. Stain-resistant fibers and vinyls make for awesome dining room chairs and mudroom bench cushions, mildew-resistant fabrics perform wonderfully as bathroom shower curtains, and fade-resistant textiles make perfect window treatments. When these tough options are imagined into decorative pillows, sofas, and shades, your home just becomes more beautiful and easier to keep clean under the messiest of families!
4Large porcelain slabs and tiles that mirror the luxurious look of marble while sidestepping its high maintenance have become a darling of interior designers. I love how these innovative surfaces offer the timeless elegance of marble without the hassle of sealing, staining, or delicate care routines. With advancements in technology, porcelain can now replicate the veining, color variations, and intricate patterns of natural marble with astonishing realism. This means homeowners can enjoy the opulent aesthetic of marble in their spaces without worrying about etching, scratching, or discoloration. Additionally, the large format of these porcelain slabs opens up new design possibilities, creating seamless and visually striking surfaces in kitchens, bathrooms, and beyond. As an Interior designer, I really appreciate the versatility and durability of these marble-inspired porcelain slabs, which allows me to unleash my creativity while ensuring long-lasting beauty and functionality for my clients' spaces. Their lower price points, compared to real stone, also allows me to stay in or under client's budgets. Needless to say, my clients are loving them too!
BONUS! Lara's 2 Additional Trends for 2024
5A Gravitation away from Grays to Greige: It is a versatile color that sits between grey and beige on the color spectrum, blending the cool neutrality of grey with the warmth of beige. Clients are getting tired of all gray and white rooms. It's time to move on to more taupey/brownish neutral colors, which are warmer and a bit more inviting than cooler gray tones. Griege subtle undertones can range from taupe to tan, creating a soft and inviting hue that complements a variety of interior styles. Greige is surging in popularity in in my interior designs for several reasons. Firstly, it offers a more nuanced alternative to the starkness of grey, adding depth and warmth to a space while maintaining a modern aesthetic. Secondly, greige serves as an excellent backdrop for layering textures and incorporating pops of color, allowing for greater design flexibility. Additionally, greige has a timeless quality that transcends trends, making it a safe yet stylish choice for homeowners and designers alike. In a world where comfort and versatility are paramount, greige emerges as the perfect balance between contemporary sophistication and cozy warmth, hence its increasing popularity in interior design.
6Conscious Interior Design Consumerism: This trend follows the concept that less is more, but with a focus on buying fewer things and items that are eco-friendly. Making thoughtful choices in my designs that consider the environment and support sustainable practices. Refinishing a floor with eco-friendly stain rather than pulling it up and tossing it, selecting low VOC paints, using recycled fabrics and sourcing from furniture companies following best practices and principles to reduce harm to the earth. Recycling old furniture and cabinets is definitely also on trend. Sourcing antiques, or re-using client's existing furniture to incorporate into my new designs for them is definitely on trend now and will continue going into the future.
