Lara's Process: A Stunning Holiday Table Setting in 7 Easy Steps!
H osting Thanksgiving this year and feeling a bit overwhelmed? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! The key to a successful celebration is staying organized. From setting a beautiful table to preparing for unexpected guests, I’ve put together a handy checklist and several bonus tips to make your holiday both stress-free and stunning. Let's dive in!
Lara's Table Setting Checklist & Bonus Tips
1Select Table Linens: Tablecloths, Napkins, and/or Runners
The foundation of a gorgeous table setting starts with your linens. Choose a tablecloth, napkins, and a table runner, if you like to use those, that complement your Thanksgiving or any other holiday color palette.
Tip: Have linens cleaned/pressed if needed. In case you are wondering, a table runner is a narrow, decorative cloth cover to complement or replace your tablecloths. It enhances your table decor, especially if you are using a solid tablecloth underneath, or no tablecloth at all.
2Get Dishes, Silverware, Stemware, Serving Platters, & Utensils Organized
Once your linens are ready, it’s time to organize your tableware. Count your dishes, silverware, and stemware to make sure you have enough for all your guests. Don't forget your serving platters and serving utensils, too!
Tip: I always make sure to have a few extra sets of dishes and chairs available for those surprise last-minute guests!
3Floral Arrangements
Floral arrangements add a beautiful touch to your holiday table. Search for arrangements that match your color scheme, and be sure to order from your local florist ahead of time. If you're making your own arrangements, gather your vases and look online for inspirational photos.
Tip: Try adding an unexpected color this year into the mix! Keep arrangements low so guests can see each other over the table. For a console or center table, go with a tall coordinating arrangement and don't forget a petite bouquet for the guest powder room!
4Candles for Ambiance
Candles can set the perfect mood for any special dinner. Gather candlestick holders, votives, and candles of various sizes and shapes. These can add interest and balance to your table while creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Tip: Use a variety of sizes/shapes to add interest and balance. During dinner, dim the lights and let the candlelight's soft glow create a warm, welcoming vibe. If you're concerned about safety, flameless battery powered candles, while certainly not as pretty, will do the job also.
5Small Table Decor: Napkin Rings, Decorative Items & Accents
It’s the little details that make all the difference when setting a beautiful table. Think napkin rings, small decorative items, and accents to elevate your setting. Ensure that any decorative items you add are consistent with your color scheme and style.
Tip: Some of my Thanksgiving decor favs are velvet pumpkins, sparkly acorns, real pine cones, and fallen dried leaves. Strategically place these around the candles and florals, leaving spaces to place food.
6Buffet Signs or Place Cards
Whether you’re serving a buffet or a sit-down dinner, it’s helpful to have a plan for guests. If you’re hosting a buffet, order or print food signs to label each dish. For a sit-down dinner, consider printed place cards to designate seating. Make sure to match your food signs and place cards to the colors that match your table decor.
Tip: These small details will help guests feel comfortable and organized, it adds a touch of elegance to your setting.
7Create a Festive Holiday Playlist
While many enjoy the excitement of the big games on Thanksgiving, adding some fun and festive background music creates a relaxing atmosphere during dinner. If you are going for a more mellow vibe, then create a playlist with a soft soothing soundtrack, while enjoying the meal.
Tip: Scout out playlists or compile your own in advance. Test connecting your playlist to your wireless systems in advance to make sure they are working properly or purchase inexpensive bluetooth speakers to place strategically around your rooms.
And there you have it! Follow these steps to ensure all of your holiday tables look beautiful, feel welcoming, and are ready for all your guests to be dazzled & delighted!
Wishing you a fun, festive, and memorable holiday!
